SuedeMUSE

Tonight’s card, from Muse. Same one for every musician on earth.

One card a night. Same card for everyone at the table. Sit with it, light the fuse, and the night goes in your ledger.

Suit: INK.1

DEAD MAN’S PEN

Write the verse in somebody else’s voice: someone who’d never approve of you. Ten minutes. Their words, your melody.

First move: Name the person out loud before you write a word.

Talk to Muse, no card required

What this is

Muse is a musician companion at Suede Labs: one creative constraint a night, the same card for every musician on earth, plus a chat companion for songwriting, music theory, and gear talk.

Every musician knows the blank page. It doesn’t respond to willpower, and it definitely doesn’t respond to another browser tab of inspiration. What breaks it is a wall to push against: one constraint, specific enough to obey, strange enough to wake your hands up.

So: one card a night. The same card for every musician on earth, dealt at midnight, gone by the next. Flip it, give it ten minutes, and I’ll sit with you while you work. I’m Muse. I know gear and theory more than is healthy, but I’m more interested in what you do with the card.

Eno had a deck. Tarot readers have a deck. This one knows what a chorus is.

The four suits

INK

Words. For when every line sounds like a greeting card.

WIRE

Melody and harmony. For when your fingers keep playing yesterday’s song.

PULSE

Rhythm and groove. For when everything you make marches in place.

SMOKE

Tone and texture. For when the sound is clean and dead.

House rules

  1. 1. One card a night.
  2. 2. One burn.
  3. 3. Ten minutes.
  4. 4. Nobody checks your homework.

These rules are made up. Obey them anyway. That’s the whole trick.

The night ledger

Same card, every musician on earth. Here’s what a night at this table can look like.

The house keeps a ledger: the card that was dealt, what they did with it, and what it did back. Breakthroughs and stuck nights both go on the record.

built the whole hook around a minor-seventh leap, landed it once per phrase like the card said

the chorus finally lifts instead of circling the verse. first hook in a month I didn’t delete.

BROKE MODE

phone mic, amp too small, killed every plugin except one spring reverb

the cheap demo has more blood in it than the produced version. producer agrees, annoyingly.

@februaryghostJUN 29broke throughillustrative

burned HALF SPEED · drew ONE TAKE, PHONE MIC

burned it, metronomes and I are in a fight. triaged to tone, got the red dot on before I was ready

one take, flaws in, no punch-ins. best vocal I’ve cut this year and I can’t explain why.

BORROWED SPINE

No. 12 / 32
JUN 28

@jjnokesJUN 28still circlingillustrative

stole the chord loop from a song I love too much to be objective about

every melody I sang over it was theirs, not mine. card won tonight. rematch pending.

MONO, QUIET

No. 32 / 32
JUN 27

@quiethenryJUN 27broke throughillustrative

whole mix in mono at conversation volume, no exceptions

the bridge died at whisper level. loudness had been doing the writing. cut it. song’s shorter and true.

TEN NOUNS

No. 5 / 32
JUN 26

@inkwelldryJUN 26broke throughillustrative

“glow stars still on the ceiling” broke me a little. first finished verse in six weeks.

BODY DOUBLE

No. 24 / 32
JUN 24

@beltloopJUN 24still circlingillustrative

built the beat from knees, table, and keys in a jar. recorded one pass

sounded like a man fighting his kitchen. keeping the jar in the session though.

The other deck

“The house deck is the same for everyone. Yours shouldn’t be. The app deals to the dimensions you dodge, keeps score, and puts every session on the record: dated, stamped, yours.”
