The music theory questions musicians actually ask

Theory courses start at notation. Your questions start mid-song.

Formal theory education starts at the staff: clefs, note names, key signatures, four-part writing. Working musicians’ questions start somewhere else entirely — mid-song, mid-jam, holding a chord that should not work and does. The mismatch is why so many self-taught players bounce off theory twice: once when a course buries them in notation, and again when they conclude theory has nothing for them.

It does. But it is easier to take theory as a naming system for things your ear already approved than as a rulebook you were supposed to read first. Here are the questions that actually come up, with the shortest honest answers.

“Why does this chord work? It shouldn’t be in the key.”

The most common version: you are in a minor key, you end on a major chord, and it sounds inevitable instead of wrong. A progression like A minor, F, C, G that lands on E major — that E has a G sharp in it, which is not in A minor’s key signature at all. It works because the G sharp is a leading tone: one half-step below A, it pulls hard toward home. Composers have been borrowing it for centuries; the name for the move is the dominant (or, when it visits from another key, a secondary dominant).

The general principle is bigger than the example: keys are a home base, not a fence. Chords borrowed from the parallel major or minor, dominants of chords other than the tonic, the flat-VI that shows up in half the rock canon — all standard, all “out of key,” all fine. When an outside chord sounds good, your ear has usually detected one of two things: a strong voice pulling by half-step, or a borrowed color the song earns. Theory’s job is to tell you which, so you can do it again on purpose.

“What key am I actually in?”

Find the chord that feels like putting your bags down. Play the progression on a loop and stop on each chord in turn; the one where the song feels finished is your tonic, whatever chord the song starts on. (Songs lie about their key in the first bar constantly.)

Two complications worth knowing. Relative major and minor — C major and A minor — share every note, so the key signature cannot settle the question; only the resting point can. And some songs genuinely sit between two homes or move mid-song. If your verse resolves to A minor and your chorus resolves to C, that is not confusion, that is a design — one worth keeping.

“Why does my progression feel like it never lands?”

Usually one of three mechanical causes.

No dominant motion. If your chords never approach home by a fifth (or by a leading tone), the ear never gets the tension-release event it reads as arrival. Loops built entirely of IV and vi shimmer pleasantly and land nowhere — which is a legitimate sound, but a choice you should be making, not suffering.

The loop resets instead of resolving. Four-bar loops that end on the tonic’s neighbor (a G in C major, say) hand the resolution to the downbeat of the next repeat. Break the loop once — hold bar four, or change its chord — and the landing appears.

The melody won’t land either. A progression can resolve while the melody hangs on a non-chord tone. If the last melody note is not in the final chord, the ear reports unfinished business no matter what the guitars do. End the phrase on the tonic chord’s root or third and feel the difference.

“What scale fits over this chord?”

The honest answer for most non-jazz writing: fewer notes than you think. Over a D7, the mechanical answer is D Mixolydian, but the usable answer is: the chord tones (D, F sharp, A, C), plus passing notes your ear signs off on. Chord tones on the strong beats, anything you like in between — that one rule covers most melodic situations and explains why your “wrong” notes on weak beats never sounded wrong.

Modes earn their keep later, as flavors: Mixolydian is major with the seventh flattened (the sound of half of classic rock), Dorian is minor with a bright sixth. Learn them as adjustments to scales you know, not as seven new alphabets.

“Why do all my melodies sound the same?”

Because melody has two components and you are only varying one. Pitch gets all the attention; rhythm is where melodies are actually memorable. Take a melody you have written and clap it — no pitches. If every phrase starts on beat one and moves in even eighth notes, that is the sameness, and no amount of new notes will fix it. Start a phrase on the “and” of two. Hold one note twice as long as feels responsible. Say the lyric out loud and steal its natural rhythm. Your pitch instincts are probably fine; they have been steering with half the wheel.

The pattern in all of this

Every question above has the same shape: the ear noticed something, and the player wanted a name for it. That is the right order. Theory did not invent the leading tone; it observed centuries of musicians resolving to it and wrote the observation down. When you learn the names for things you already do, two doors open — you can do them on purpose, and you can ask better questions about the ones you cannot name yet.

A companion you can interrogate mid-song — why did that work, what do I call this, what is the usual next move so I can refuse it — turns theory back into what it was originally: notes musicians passed each other about what the good stuff was made of.
