What can I practice over one sustained note?

Try slow scales, held notes, a short melody or a two-note improvisation. Keep the drone fixed so you can compare each note with the same center. For rhythm practice, open the metronome or groove tool separately.

Does the drone measure whether I am in tune?

The drone supplies a listening reference; it does not score your playing. Use the tuner when you need a visual pitch reading. With the drone, focus on the sound of your note against the sustained reference.

How to use

Quick start: Drone Note Generator for Practice

Choose the pitch you want to hear as the tonal center. Begin at a comfortable volume and select a timbre that leaves room for your instrument or voice.
Set the reference pitch to match the musicians or recording you are using. Keep the reference consistent through the exercise.
Start the drone and hold its note on your instrument. Listen to the combined sound, then move slowly to another scale tone and back to the center.
Add the fifth when you want a broader harmonic reference. Improvise a short phrase, leave a pause, and listen to how its final note feels against the sustained sound.

The card that calls for the drone

Muse deals one constraint card a night from a 32-card deck, the same card for every musician. This one points straight at the drone.

THE PAD SMOKE · No. 29 / 32
Hold one note or chord the entire time: drone, organ, a held key. Build everything against the one unmoving thing.
The drone holds any note from octave 2 to 5 for as long as the ten minutes run.
