How to use
Quick start: Drum Groove Sequencer
- Choose a preset groove or begin with a simple pattern. Select the step count and identify where the main beats fall before adding extra hits.
- Press cells in the kick, snare, hat and rim rows to cycle their states. Build a clear pulse first, then use accents to shape the phrase.
- Set the tempo and start playback. Adjust swing while listening to how the offbeats move; keep the pattern simple enough that the change is easy to hear.
- Play a short part over the loop, then name and save a useful pattern. Return to the same groove when comparing two versions of your own rhythm part.
Questions
- How is this different from a metronome?
- A metronome emphasizes the timing grid. The groove adds a repeating drum pattern with instrument placement and accents, giving you a rhythmic context for a riff or song. Try the same part with both to hear what the backing contributes.
- Where do saved patterns go?
- Named patterns are saved in this browser on this device. They are useful for returning to a practice groove, but clearing site data removes that local record. Note an important pattern’s tempo and settings separately.
From the House Deck
The cards that call for the groove
Muse deals one constraint card a night from a 32-card deck, the same card for every musician. These point straight at the groove.
DROP THE ONE PULSE · No. 17 / 32
Write the groove with nothing on beat one. Let the downbeat be a ghost the whole band leans around.
Leave step one empty on every row of the groove and build the pattern around the gap.
THREE OVER FOUR PULSE · No. 20 / 32
Loop a bar of four, write a phrase that’s three long, and let them chase each other until they line back up. The collision is the part.
The groove loops one four-beat bar, so it holds the four while you play the three against it.
